A Community-Led Effort to Support Seabright

Lower Seabright & Habor Community
Lower Seabright is a small but vibrant corner of Santa Cruz — home to independent restaurants, coastal shops, local makers, and a community that cares deeply about supporting one another. The Seabright Collective was created to bring these businesses together under a shared identity, highlight the neighborhood’s unique character, and make it easier for locals, students, and visitors to discover everything the area has to offer.

Seabright's History
Seabright is one of Santa Cruz’s oldest coastal neighborhoods, with roots dating back to the late 1800s. Originally developed as a seaside subdivision and resort area, it attracted visitors and residents drawn to its wide beaches, ocean views, and proximity to the city. In 1905, Seabright was officially annexed into Santa Cruz, marking its transition from a seasonal beach destination into a permanent residential community. A small commercial corridor along Seabright Avenue emerged to serve both locals and visitors, helping establish the neighborhood’s close-knit character.
Throughout the 20th century, Seabright continued to evolve alongside the changing coastline. The construction of the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor in the 1960s reshaped the area and reinforced its identity as a year-round coastal neighborhood. Today, Seabright remains deeply connected to its maritime past, blending historic roots with an active, community-driven culture that reflects generations of life along Monterey Bay.
Why We Exist (The Story)
A Neighborhood at a Turning Point
Lower Seabright has always been a vibrant coastal neighborhood; home to local restaurants, shops, and gathering places that reflect the heart of Santa Cruz. But recent changes challenged how people discover and access this special area.
How Access Changes Affected Businesses
With the bridge closure stopping traffic from the east to the west side of Santa Cruz, many Seabright businesses became harder to discover even though they remain open, active, and ready to welcome the community.
A Community-Led Response
The Seabright Collective was created to respond with collaboration, creativity, and connection. By bringing businesses together under a shared identity, we’re helping the neighborhood stay visible, accessible, and thriving.
